West African Ensemble: Music from Mali, Guiné, and Senegal

  Toubab is a group of American musicians dedicated to learning and performing

traditional music from Africa. David Gilden has been traveling regularly to

West Africa to study the 21-string kora harp for the past 15 years. Banning Eyre plays guitar

and Dirck Westervelt plays banjo and bass. They have spent time

in Bamako, Mali, and Harare, Zimbabwe learning from masters, including Djelimady Tounkara,

lead guitarist for the Super Rail Band, kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate, and in Zimbabwe,

Chimurenga kings Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited.
